About weight for height

Weight-for-height is a clinical assessment used to evaluate a child or young person's weight relative to their height. It helps determine whether their weight is within the expected range for their height and age, based on reference data from large population studies.

This measure is particularly useful when height, rather than age, is the more reliable indicator of growth, such as in children with delayed or accelerated growth. It complements, but does not replace, other anthropometric measures such as BMI-for-age or weight-for-age.

About this calculator

This calculator uses UK-WHO growth chart data (RCPCH, 2011), derived from:

It calculates:

  • BMI and median BMI for the selected height and age
  • BMI centile (relative to UK reference population)
  • Weight-for-height percentage

These results can help clinicians assess nutritional status, monitor progress, and identify possible underweight or overweight concerns.
